Having your child in the home?  Who would do such a thing?  Didn’t that only happen back in the early days of our country when doctor’s had to go out to the prairie and deliver babies?

Not quite.  There is a large group of women who are discovering the benefts of having a baby at home, or homebirth as it is sometimes called.

This practice of having your baby at home is called midwifery.  Although they are usually not doctors or nurses, people who are in this profession are professionally regulated.  I myself have seen the steady rise of homebirths through my practice as a San Diego certified midwife.

The people, generally women, who perform this line of work are called homebirth midwives.  Midwives is the term most people are familiar with and means a person who helps during childbirth by providing support of the labor and delivery.

Now why a midwife is usually not a doctor or nurse is because the practice of having your baby at home, or midwifery is generally the belief that pregnancy and birth are natural normal events.  This is in stark contrast with the medical model which relies on medicine to assist and improve the pregnancy and delivery.

With that aside, lets look at why a lot of women are having babies at home rather than hospitals.  What benefits are making women choose homebirths?

First off, with the continued presence of the midwife, the length of labor can be reduced.  Most women aren’t told that pain medications actually slows down the labor, even though it helps with the pain.  This actually creates more pain and makes the labor last longer.

Second, midwifery practices actually causes a reduction in the need for forceps and other devices in a delivery.  The process of allowing the birth and delivery to happen naturally is what reduces the need for those devices.

Third, the possiblity of c-section deliveries are actually reduced.  Most c-sections happen when during labor, it was thought that a natural birth process was not possible.  Either it was the baby’s safety that was in mind or the mother’s safety.  Well in reality, complications were caused when the natural process was stopped and not allowed to continue.

These were 3 benefits of having a homebirth naturally.  There are plenty more benefits, but most women would agree for pregnancy these are 3 huge benefits. 

  So even though some might call it strange to have a child at home, recent studies indicate that allowing a natural birth to happen is much safer for the mom and the baby.  With over 300 births attended as a homebirth midwife in San Diego, this has proven to be the case time and time again.

Some experts have even said that we can absorb information better when we are actually not paying full attention to them.

But when did this audio book phenomenon really start? In other words, what is the past of audio books?

Audio books seem to be a brand new invention, right?

WRONG!

It is very easy to make the assumption that audio books are a recent invention because of the mention of CDs, downloadable digital formats, MP3s, PDAs and other technological jargons each time audio books are discussed. But audio books started far before now.

In order for us to know just how long audio books have existed, we first need to know what audio books actually are.

Forget any other jargon you may have seen, audio books are just books that are in audio format, to be listened to instead of read.

That being the case, such recordings of books in audio formats have been around for a very long time – far before now. If you want to be specific, it is safe to say they have existed for at least half century ago.

It could even be longer, if you include the Library of Congress recordings made especially for the American Foundation for the Blind and distributed free throughout the U.S.

Although Robin Whitten (Editor and Founder of the only magazine which is only available to the audio book industry) said – Audiofile–http://www.AudioFileMagazine.com, Caedmon (now a subsidiary of HarperCollins Publishers) can be credited for starting the recording of literature as far back as half a century ago.

Also, he said that Caedmon was only a small company way back then in New York, which began the process of recording the great authors and poets of the 1950s to audio. Specifically, he said one of the earliest recordings were by greats such as Dylan Thomas, T.S. Eliot, Fitzgerald and Robert Frost.

What happened then was that they were simply recorded while doing their own works and made as vinyl records.

But the early recording made here could be argued to be the very first collection of audio books ever made.

However, audio books did not transition to the format of cassette tapes until the late 70s – 80s. From then on, it grew until audio books in tape format were accepted by everyone and sundry.

For whatever reason however, the audio book phenomenon didn’t really kick off until the 1990s.

And now that we have changed from cassette tapes to compact disks even more people have an interest in audio books.

With the explosion of the world wide web and everything that comes with it, audio books have now gone from vinyl records, tapes and CDs into downloadable digital formats. These can be listened to in many different ways, on a desktop PC, laptop, MP3 player etc.

If you still want to ‘go back through time’ the original book recordings that began this audio book industy are available.

Impossible?

Not really.

Some of those early 1950s analog recordings by Caedmon which were performed by the greats of those days can be purchased today on the Internet.
